Platycerium Ellisii is closely related to P. Alcicorne Africac, with which it shares a yellowish-green, glossy mantle and a tendency to develop a shield in spring and summer. In autumn, the shield turns dark brown near the center and spreads out toward the edges. The antennae of P. Ellisii differ from those of P. Alcicorne Africa in that they are more shallowly lobed and have larger lobes.
P. Ellisii is found in the forests of Madagascar where it lives beneath the canopy of giant mangroves, so it requires shade and high humidity. Its surface is covered with a waxy layer that helps retain water, but the thin barrier layer makes it quite limited in its ability to store water.
P. Ellisii roots are shallow and concentrated near the shoots, so they do not need as large a potting medium as Australian species. P. Ellisii usually produce their strongest seedlings in the summer, if they do not produce seedlings, it means they need to be trimmed back and supplemented with nutrients. P. Diversifolium is a fairly common form of P. Ellisii and has slightly longer antennae.
Hybrids from P. Ellissi:
· P. Ellisotis (P. Ellisii x P. Elephantotis)
· P. Ellisii cv. Jimmy Davis
· P. Smallfern (P. Ellisii x P. Vassei)
· P. Blue Moon (P. diversifolium x. P. willinckii)
Note: The above information is only relative, the living conditions of the tree also depend a lot on other objective factors.
