Platycerium madagascariense has a very distinctive shield with raised veins forming small ridges that surround the tree's root ball. P. ridleyi also has a shield with raised veins but does not form prominent small grooves like P. Madagascariense. These two species are completely unrelated. The new shield of P. Madagascariense is thin and light green, when mature it will turn darker green. What is more special is that the shield of the tree is not formed to collect organic debris to feed the tree, some observations show that they will create a place for ants, ants help them collect organic matter to nourish the tree, however this also creates risks when these gaps also attract many other significant destructive insects such as aphids. P. Madagascariense is famous for being one of the most difficult breeds of dragon nests, they require very high humidity but are very susceptible to rot and fungal invasion. Separating the young is not easy either as you have to wait for the shield to grow to 2.5cm in size before you can safely separate them. The lifespan of P. Madagascariense is quite short due to frequent insect attacks. The oldest P. Madagascariense recorded was 10 years old, and in their second year they were able to produce spores. If cared for properly and protected from insects, P. Madagascariense will definitely be a masterpiece in your dragon nest collection.
