Colocasia
Colocasia is a genus of tropical plants belonging to the Araceae family, known for its edible starchy tuber varieties such as taro (Colocasia esculenta). They are often called "elephant ear" plants due to their large, heart-shaped or arrow-shaped leaves. They prefer moist soil, grow quickly, and are widespread in Asia and Africa.
Besides their value as food, many ornamental Colocasia varieties such as Black Coral, White Lava, or Pharaoh's Mask are grown as ornamental plants thanks to their mysterious black leaves, metallic sheen, or striking contrasting veins, creating an impressive focal point for gardens and tropical landscapes.
Colocasia prefers light to partial sun, nutrient-rich, well-draining soil, and requires regular watering because its large leaves evaporate water quickly. During cold seasons, the tubers may go dormant and the leaves die back; the plant will regrow when the weather warms up.
