Agave
Agave is a genus of succulent plants native to the Americas, particularly Mexico, renowned for producing agave syrup (a natural sweetener) and as a key ingredient in Tequila and Mezcal. Beyond its economic value, many agave species are also cultivated as ornamental plants due to their succulent leaves arranged in a symmetrical rosette, with sharp spines or white filaments along the edges, creating a striking architectural feature for arid (xeriscape) style gardens.
Agave is extremely drought-tolerant, preferring full sun and very well-drained soil – this is crucial to prevent root rot. The plant grows slowly but has a long lifespan; some species flower only once in their lifetime before dying, known as "century flowers.".
