Dioscorea
Dioscorea is a large genus of plants belonging to the Dioscoreaceae family, widely known for its edible tubers such as yams and taro. However, among bonsai enthusiasts, some Dioscorea species – especially Dioscorea elephantipes – are favored for their swollen, rough, turtle-shell-like caudex (tuber), and the slender vines that grow from the top of the tuber.
These unique succulent plants grow slowly, can live for decades, and continue to "swell" over time, making each plant a valuable natural masterpiece worth collecting.
Ornamental Dioscorea plants require plenty of light, extremely well-draining soil (often mixed with perlite or pumice), and infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot. During the plant's dormant season (shedding leaves), watering should be minimized.
